The short answer
Measure your longest foot in centimetres, then read that number off the chart for the specific model you want — because Birchbury's Brenston chart is not the same as the Bramford and Carnforth chart. If your measurement puts you between two sizes, the brand's guidance splits by foot size:
- US 11 or smaller: take the larger size (a 9.5 measurement becomes a 10).
- US 12 or larger: take the smaller size.
- Everyone: there are no half sizes except 11.5, and no width fittings — the wide toe box is the width adjustment.
Returns and exchanges are free within 30 days with drop-off at Happy Returns locations, so ordering one size and swapping it costs you nothing but time. If you genuinely cannot decide, that policy is the tiebreaker.

How Birchbury sizing works
Three things make Birchbury sizing different from buying a mainstream sneaker.
Everything is labelled in US men's sizing. There is no separate women's run. Birchbury publishes a women's equivalent — add roughly 1.5 to the men's number, so a US men's 8 is about a US women's 9.5 — but the shoe is built on a men's last.
There are almost no half sizes. The run is 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 11.5, 12, 13, 14, 15 and 16 on the Bramford and Carnforth; the Brenston starts at 6. That single 11.5 is the only half size in the catalogue, which is why so much of Birchbury's own copy deals with being between sizes.
Fit is set by length, not by your usual size. Barefoot lasts are shaped differently from tapered conventional ones — more room across the toes, often a touch less volume over the instep. Your Nike size is a weak predictor; a centimetre measurement is a strong one.
Note: Birchbury publishes no stack height or sole thickness in millimetres for any of the three models, so we can't tell you how thick the sole is. The brand states only that the inside is flat and zero-drop, with a decorative faux heel outside. There are also no width fittings — one width per size.
The official Birchbury size charts
Birchbury runs two separate charts. The Bramford and Carnforth share one; the Brenston has its own, with ranges roughly half a size apart from the other two. Measure first, then use the chart that matches your model.
Chart 1 — Bramford sneaker and Carnforth chukka boot
| US men | US women | EU | Foot length (cm) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 5 | 6.5 | 37 | up to 23.6 |
| 6 | 7.5 | 38 | 23.6 – 24.3 |
| 7 | 8.5 | 39 | 24.3 – 24.9 |
| 8 | 9.5 | 40 | 24.9 – 25.6 |
| 9 | 10.5 | 41 | 25.6 – 26.3 |
| 10 | 11.5 | 42 | 26.3 – 26.9 |
| 11 | 12.5 | 43 | 26.9 – 27.6 |
| 11.5 | 13.5 | 44 | 27.6 – 28.2 |
| 12 | 14.5 | 45 | 28.2 – 28.9 |
| 13 | 15.5 | 46 | 28.9 – 29.6 |
| 14 | 16.5 | 47 | 29.6 – 30.2 |
| 15 | 17.5 | 48 | 30.2 – 30.9 |
| 16 | 18.5 | 49 | 30.9 – 31.6 |
Chart 2 — Brenston dress shoe
| US | EU | Foot length (cm) |
|---|---|---|
| 7 | 39 | up to 24.9 |
| 8 | 40 | 24.9 – 25.8 |
| 9 | 41 | 25.8 – 26.6 |
| 10 | 42 | 26.6 – 27.5 |
| 11 | 43 | 27.5 – 28.3 |
| 11.5 | 44 | 28.3 – 29.2 |
| 12 | 45 | 29.2 – 30.0 |
| 13 | 46 | 30.0 – 30.9 |
| 14 | 47 | 30.9 – 31.7 |
| 15 | 48 | 31.7 – 32.6 |
| 16 | 49 | 32.6 – 33.4 |
Compare the two and the gap shows up at the top of the run: a 27.4 cm foot is a US 11 in a Bramford but a US 10 in a Brenston. If you already own one Birchbury model, don't assume the same number carries across.
How to measure your feet in two minutes
Birchbury's own method needs a sheet of paper, a wall and a ruler.
- Put on the socks you plan to wear with the shoes — thick wool can eat several millimetres.
- Measure in the afternoon or evening. Feet swell through the day, and a morning measurement will under-size you.
- Place a sheet of paper flat against a wall, stand on it with your heel touching the wall, weight on the foot.
- Mark the paper at the tip of your longest toe, then measure from the wall to that mark in centimetres.
- Repeat for the other foot and use the larger number — most people have one foot up to half a size bigger.
Birchbury also offers a Strutfit scanning tool on each product page ("What is my size?") that estimates your size from phone photos. Treat the paper measurement as the primary number and the scan as a second opinion — if the two disagree, the chart wins.

If you're between sizes
Here Birchbury's published advice becomes genuinely confusing, and we'd rather flag it than paper over it. The brand says two different things on its own product pages:
- The Bramford page's main sizing note says simply: if you're between sizes, choose the larger one (9.5 becomes 10).
- The Bramford FAQ, and the main note on the Carnforth page, split the advice: size up if you wear US 11 or smaller, size down if you wear US 12 or larger.
The split version appears in more places, so that's the rule we'd follow. The logic: size increments get physically larger at the top of the run, so rounding up at a US 13 adds more dead length than rounding up at a US 8.
Size up when…
- Your measurement lands in the top third of a size band
- You wear US 11 or smaller
- You'll wear thick socks or an aftermarket insole
- Your feet swell during long shifts or flights
Size down when…
- You wear US 12 or larger and sit between sizes
- Your measurement is barely into the next band
- You have a narrow heel and want less slip
- You plan to wear thin dress socks only
One more lever: the insoles in all three models are removable. Pulling the insole out buys noticeably more interior volume, which can rescue a pair that's slightly too snug; adding a thin insole takes up slack in one that's slightly too long. Either is a cheaper fix than a return if you're close.
Model-by-model sizing notes
Bramford sneaker — the forgiving one
The Bramford is the easiest of the three to size, and the one we'd pick for a first order because of that. Full-grain leather relaxes over the first week or two, the lacing covers a long section of the foot so you can cinch down a slightly roomy pair, and the removable insole adjusts volume in both directions. It's rated 4.6/5 from roughly 1,195 reviews — the highest rating and biggest sample in the lineup, which suggests the fit is predictable. $120 at the time of checking, with individual colourways sometimes discounted below that.

Check Bramford sizes →Brenston dress shoe — use its own chart
Two things matter here. The Brenston has its own chart, so look it up again even if you already own a Bramford. And the run starts at 6, so the smallest feet in the catalogue can't be fitted in this model at all. A dress shoe also has less lacing adjustment than a sneaker, leaving less room to correct a size that's slightly off — be careful with the tape measure. $180, rated 4.5/5 from about 697 reviews. If a dress code is driving the purchase, our barefoot dress shoes guide covers the alternatives.

Carnforth chukka boot — leave room for socks
A boot you'll wear in cold weather is a boot you'll wear with thicker socks, so size for the socks rather than for bare feet. The Carnforth shares the Bramford chart, has a laced throat you can cinch (Birchbury even suggests trimming the laces shorter for a tighter hold), and carries the lowest rating of the three at 4.4/5 from roughly 351 reviews. At $197 it's also the dearest, which makes getting the size right first time more worthwhile. Torn between this and the sneaker? We compared them in Bramford vs Carnforth.

Check Carnforth sizes →Width, volume and the wide toe box
Birchbury doesn't sell width fittings — no D, EE or 4E option, one width per size. The brand's answer to width is the anatomical toe box, which it says "accommodates most foot widths." In practice the forefoot is generous by conventional standards while the heel and instep are fairly normal.
That suits the common shape of a wide forefoot and a narrower heel well, and two groups less well. If your foot is uniformly wide — heel and instep too — a single width may still feel tight over the arch, and sizing up adds length you don't need rather than girth you do. If your heel is very narrow, expect some heel lift; a heel-lock lacing pattern and keeping the insole in both help.
Worth saying plainly: a wide toe box is a fit feature, not a treatment. Birchbury makes no medical claims, and neither do we. If you have bunions, neuropathy, plantar fasciitis or persistent foot pain, see a podiatrist before changing footwear — particularly before moving to a zero-drop shoe, which shifts load onto the calf and Achilles. Our wide toe box shoes guide goes deeper on toe-box shape across brands.
Five sizing mistakes to avoid
- Ordering your sneaker size. Conventional sizing is inconsistent between brands. Measure instead.
- Measuring one foot. Asymmetry of up to half a size is normal — fit the bigger foot.
- Measuring barefoot, then wearing socks. Measure in the socks you'll actually wear.
- Reusing the Bramford number for the Brenston. Different chart, genuinely different bands.
- Expecting leather to stretch longer. Leather relaxes in girth, not in length. Width problems ease in; length problems don't.
Returns: the risk-free way to test fit
Birchbury publishes a 30-day, no-questions-asked refund policy with free return shipping and drop-off at Happy Returns locations nationwide, and accepts exchanges in the same window. That changes the calculation on a borderline size: order what the chart gives you, try the shoes indoors on a clean floor, and exchange if the fit is wrong. Keep the box and stay indoors until you're confident — policies cover returns, not damage — and check the current terms on the product page, since ours is a snapshot from October 2026. Buying for long shifts on hard floors? Our best barefoot shoes for work guide covers what else to prioritise.

Birchbury sizing FAQ
Do Birchbury shoes run true to size?
They run close to true to length against Birchbury's own chart, which is the number that matters — the brand doesn't describe its shoes as running large or small. What catches people out is width and the missing half sizes, not length. Measure in centimetres and use the chart for your model rather than converting from another brand's size.
Should I size up in Birchbury shoes?
Only if you're between two sizes and wear US 11 or smaller. At US 12 and above, Birchbury's guidance is to take the smaller size instead. If your measurement falls cleanly inside one band, order that size and don't add anything.
Does Birchbury make half sizes?
Only 11.5. Every other size in the run is a whole size, across all three models. That's why the between-sizes rule matters so much — and why the removable insole is a useful volume adjustment if a pair arrives slightly snug.
What size Birchbury should a woman order?
Birchbury sells in US men's sizing only but publishes women's equivalents: add about 1.5 to your US women's size to get the men's number, so a US women's 9.5 is roughly a US men's 8. Check the chart above against your centimetre measurement rather than relying on the conversion alone, since the shoe is built on a men's last.
Are Birchbury shoes wide enough for very wide feet?
The toe box is genuinely wide and Birchbury says it accommodates most foot widths, but there are no width fittings — one width per size. Feet that are wide at the heel and instep as well as the forefoot may still feel snug over the arch, and sizing up adds length rather than girth. Use the 30-day return window to check, and see a podiatrist if wide-fitting footwear is a medical requirement rather than a preference.
Can I exchange Birchbury shoes if the size is wrong?
Birchbury publishes a 30-day, no-questions-asked policy with free return shipping and Happy Returns drop-off, covering both refunds and exchanges. Keep the packaging and try the shoes indoors first. Confirm the current terms on the product page before ordering — we checked this in October 2026 and policies do change.
